Illustration Contest: Purple Rules

We're looking for a young artist (age 13-19) with a strong point of view to illustrate David YayGrr's next book, "Purple Rules". Finalists will receive $200 dollars, and one winner will get a chance to sign a $2,000 illustration contract to complete the illustrations for "Purple Rules".

This is your chance as an up-and-coming artist to see your work in print. Purple Rules will be distributed online, in select independent bookstores, and through All profits from the final book will be donated to Artolutiona public arts organization facilitating art programs for kids around the world.

We welcome international submissions and those from non-arts students who are passionate about their craft. Submissions open March 30th - April 20th.

What's the book about?

In the land of We everyone gets along, until one day a new king takes over and establishes the "Purple Rules." One by one, the colorful groups of his kingdom see the things they love most taken away. That is... until one man stands up to the purple king and shows him just how important our differences are.

Check out the full text here to prepare your illustration.

This rhyming book is a great reminder to appreciate what makes us all unique and introduce larger, complicated concepts to children between the ages of 5 and 12.

How does it work?

Just submit a two page spread for David YayGrr's new book, "Purple Rules". Friends, family and fans vote on which spread they like best*; at least two finalists will be chosen to do a paid ($200) sketch-based, mock-up for the full book.

A single illustrator will be chosen from the finalists. The final chosen illustrator will receive 3 free copies of the physical paperback book, $2,000 in payment, credit as the illustrator on the front cover and all future materials, a feature on the David YayGrr books website and inclusion in all future press releases regarding the book "Purple Rules".

Who can enter?

All artists between the ages of 13 and 19 are welcome to join the contest! We welcome artists of any nationality, language or country.

What to do?

1. Click here to get access to the full book text. Think about what "Purple Rules" means to you and how you can best bring the story to life for future readers.

2. Create a two page spread using any 2D medium with space to include your favorite passage from the text.

Make sure to include your chosen text in the illustration. We'd like the final book to have 30-50 pages devoted to the story, so please consider the length of the passage you choose for your two page spread.

All submitted illustrations must be either portrait layout, 8x10" or larger (keeping the same proportions) with 1/4" bleed. Based on an earlier misprint, landscape layout 10x8" with a 1/4" bleed will also be accepted. The final book will be a paperback book with a 8x10" or 10x8" trim size.

Make sure to show your personality and point of view! We're looking for illustrations that add to our story, not just illustrate what's already there.

*If this is your first time illustrating for print, here's a great article to help.

3. Submit an image of your 2 page spread, along with a description of what inspired you. Optional: Add 2 additional sketches, illustrations or images related to "Purple Rules" for voters to get a better understanding of your vision and style.

4. Share your entry with friends, family and fans to garner the most votes!

*  Finalists chosen based on votes and the judges' opinion.
